Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary: According to the Spirit of St. Louis De-Montfort's True Devotion to Mary
Published in Paperback by Tan Books & Publishers, Inc. (October, 1988)
Author: N. A. Norman
Average review score:

A Clear, Loving, Simple Way to Jesus
When I was on duty in southern Turkey, the base chaplain began a consecration to Mary. Not having heard of such a thing, I decided to give it a try. We used this small book for the entire consecration. We ended things up with a trip to Mary's house in Ephesus, Turkey, on August 15--the Assumption of Mary. Needless to say, making such a monumental consecration at the place where Mary rose to Heaven, on the very day, was incredible. I have since made the consecration each year, and am now reading deeper into Montfortian spirituality. Let this book be your guide to Mary and Jesus. It's inexpensive, simple, and pure. It combines excellent readings from Sacred Scripture, St. Louis's writings, and the Imitation of Christ.

good intro into hismiasmic mind(see also cannibals and chri)
hello
i finally found one no one has reviewed! anyway i strongly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in norman mailer but maybe doesnt want to go thru a novel to get his ideas. Norman is an articulate person and the format of interview and dialogue here places his ideas and opinions in the center without allowing to much superfluity.
he talks about...running for mayor of new york, making films, women and men, vietnam, media(there is a good discussion with m macluhan too) politics, sex, art, writing...
that said i should say that i rented it from the lib, but it really is concise and informative with a minimum of repetition.
(and if you want a similar read but more essayish find "cannibals and christians").

The Councils of the Church
Published in Paperback by Herder&Herder (01 May, 2001)
Author: Norman P. Tanner
Average review score:

A Fantastic Introduction!
I first discovered this book when I was doing some research for a paper in my graduate Italian Renaissance class. This book was not a source that I was able to site much, but since I come from a Baptist background I was very unfamiliar with the Church Councils. This book does an excellent job of succinctly (only 119 pages) sumerizing 1700 years of conciliar history. For someone who was entirely unfamiliar with the subject this was essential.

What was invaluable for my research was the Bibliography! This was the jumping off point of my research and saved me many hours in the library.

This book however is not just for the non-catholic who is unfamilliar with the church councils. I found that just this short book gave me a better basic understanding of the church councils than the average lay Catholic.

I have recently reread this book due to appologetic conversations. Most christian faiths would be well suited to have an understanding of conciliar history since their faith either clings to, protests or denies the authority of the church councils.

Captivating Illustrations!
When we bought this book, my boys wouldn't take their hands off it! The pictures captivated them and they spent weeks looking at it asking me to read it all the time (which I gladly did as it is amazingly interesting). No other book has held their attention like this one. My boys are 1 1/2 and 4 1/2 and both really enjoy it. Highly recommended.

practical tips for crisis counseling
I am studying for the ministry. This book was recommended by a pastor friend. I have been training with him. We recently had an individual die of cancer at a young age. I had lots of questions and concerns aout being able to help the family. This book helped me to understand what each of the family members were dealing with concerning this loss. I personally have not lost a cost relative, so I did not know what this family was feeling. Chapter 7 gave me a good overall understanding about how each member of the family was feeling and how I can best assist them in the grieving process. I highly recommend this book to anyone who faces life and death issues. It will help!

Critical Discourse Analysis: The Critical Study of Language (Language in Social Life Series)
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (April, 1997)
Authors: Norman Fairclough and Clive Holes
Average review score:

The future of discourse analysis and linguistics
This book paves the way for a more socially-oriented and emancipatory discourse analysis, and linguistics in general. By incorporating analyses of discourse and social practices in language studies, Norman Fairclough succeeds in advancing the idea of language as a site of constant and dynamic struggles of people in society. This book shows us: first, how language both shapes and is shaped by society; second, how language in specific contexts can be designed and redesigned by contemporary discourse technologists to market people and products; and third, how language can satisfactorily be reshaped to change society towards emancipation and democracy. Read this book to understand aspects of contemporary society. This book paves the way for language studies in the 20th century. Topsie Ruanni F. Tupas (ttupas@vt.edu)
